Dr. Kamen attended SUNY at Stony Brook, where he earned a BA degree in English. He received his dental degree from Columbia, then completed a general practice residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Afterwards, Dr. Kamen earned his Certificate in Periodontology at Harvard in 1979.

Returning to New York, Dr. Kamen spent many years as a full-time professor in the department of periodontics at Columbia, while maintaining a private faculty practice. While a faculty member at Columbia, Dr. Kamen was elected to O.K.U., the national dental honor society and became a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. He then founded and headed the department of dentistry at Helen Hayes Hospital.

After nearly twenty years of academics, Dr. Kamen melded his love of teaching with clinical practice when he joined Park Avenue Periodontal Associates while heading the dental residency at Beth Israel Hospital. When Beth Israel ended its dental residency program, Dr. Kamen returned to Columbia as an associate clinical professor. Dr. Kamen is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

When not spending time with his wife and daughter, Dr. Kamen can be found playing his guitar.
